Welcome to Fine Golf

The British Isles is lucky to have a heritage of the finest golf courses in the world because our temperate climate allows fine grasses to flourish on areas of poor soil that have not been wanted for agriculture.

There are over 2800 golf courses in the UK and Ireland and only some 200 can be defined as ‘fine’.  This independent website helps you discover these delights that give the “joy to be alive” Fine Golf feeling.

Knowledge from over 40 years of following the fine trail, that is the cradle of golf, has been acquired. We welcome you to our passionate campaign to promote the classic values of fine golf.

with interesting information on fine golf.

about the Campaign for fine golf.

What is Fine Golf ?

Money from television and commercial interests in recent decades has helped our game grow but has also introduced some less welcome tendencies contained within lush target golf.

The Campaign for Fine Golf has

a 3-fold purpose:

  • To raise the profile of ‘Fine’ in comparison to ‘Target’ golf
  • To encourage golfers to support their local Club Greenkeepers to follow Jim Arthur’s Sustainable Principles
  • To share information about Fine courses that have the “joy to be alive” factor.

About us

Our contention is that Frank Pennink’s list (published in 1962) updated by this independent Fine Golf website is the most reliable guide to the Finest golf courses in the British Isles and Ireland.

It took him 40 years but Lorne Smith, has played them all.

Through this he has also become a champion of Jim Arthur and his visionary approach to greenkeeping.
